Today's video of the day is a cooking video. Now you may be thinking that cooking videos are a dime a dozen, and that's true, but 93 year old cook and great grandmother, Clara, has over 135,000 subscribers to her YouTube page Great Depression Cooking. The key to her success, a combination of personality and a niche.

First off is personality. In any video, particularly instructional video like cooking videos, character is very important. Clara is a sweet old lady, which is not something you see on YouTube everyday, and she has a comforting effect on the audience.

Secondly, is the niche. Clara has created a channel that has a concept that can be repeated over and over again. Clara has first hand knowledge of the Depression Era, which is something that both people are interested in and do not know much about first hand. This creates a built in audience that will keep coming back for each new dish.

Character-driven journalism is not new to newspapers, though it once was. It was once called The New Journalism in the 1960s — see Truman Capote or Tom Wolfe. Today it is industry standard. In a recent study by The Reuters Institute, 40% of Americans no longer watch or read the news at all. They find it too depressing. All doom and gloom.

There is a great deal of concern, well placed, that few people under the age of 30 watch TV news. Viewership of TV news in general has fallen off, so naturally, TV executives across the boards are searching for a solution. How to appeal to a demographic that spends most of their time on social media?
