Today's video of the day is another little character video from Great Big Story. The video is a little story about a family in Korea that has been making traditional candy for generations. While the video essentially explains what this candy is, or Yeot, it is able to hold your attention because of the characters driving the story.

You'll see this in almost every video that Great Big Story has: a character that drives the video forward. Ultimately it is stories about people that viewers like -- they relate to other humans. The concept, or what the character does could be a draw, but that really only gets you to click on the video, it is the character that keeps you watching the whole time.

We here at TheVJ.com take storytelling very seriously and also think that the key ingrediant is a great character. Check out our storytelling courses and learn more. Not a member yet? Sign up for our 10-day free trial.

Character-driven journalism is not new to newspapers, though it once was. It was once called The New Journalism in the 1960s — see Truman Capote or Tom Wolfe. Today it is industry standard. Why not take the Sopranos or Breaking Bad formula and marry it to TV journalism? (How many interviews have you seen in The Sopranos? In a recent study by The Reuters Institute, 40% of Americans no longer watch or read the news at all. They find it too depressing. All doom and gloom.

There is a great deal of concern, well placed, that few people under the age of 30 watch TV news. Viewership of TV news in general has fallen off, so naturally, TV executives across the boards are searching for a solution. How to appeal to a demographic that spends most of their time on social media?
