Video of the Day: Shark Surfer

Today's video of the day is from about 10 years ago, but it's a great video and is a great example of editing and arc of story.  The video (before the days of HD it seems) shows a surfer dude who wants to surf with the sharks.  In terms of arc of story, this is the payoff. It's right in the title, Shark Surfer, so we are expecting to see in this video surfing with a shark.  The video does not just go right into that though. You could imagine, and I'm sure there are videos on YouTube now, a video with that title just showing someone surfing with sharks. This video, though, takes us back a few steps and we see the surfer preparing. We see his giant meat fishing rod, onlookers and whatnot. This makes the video much more full, and it created anticipation for when he gets the shark.

The editing in this video is also great. Rather than just one camera we have a few angles expertly put together. Take notes during this one!

Character-driven journalism is not new to newspapers, though it once was. It was once called The New Journalism in the 1960s — see Truman Capote or Tom Wolfe. Today it is industry standard. Why not take the Sopranos or Breaking Bad formula and marry it to TV journalism? (How many interviews have you seen in The Sopranos? How many Man on the Street soundbites have you seen in Breaking Bad?)

In a recent study by The Reuters Institute, 40% of Americans no longer watch or read the news at all. They find it too depressing. All doom and gloom.

There is a great deal of concern, well placed, that few people under the age of 30 watch TV news. Viewership of TV news in general has fallen off, so naturally, TV executives across the boards are searching for a solution. How to appeal to a demographic that spends most of their time on social media?
