It's Oscar season, and that means that all of us are rushing out to theaters to see the latest and greatest the movie world has to offer us.  From Star Wars to The Revenant there is something for everybody out there this time of year from the best directors Hollywood has to offer.  Among these directors there is a grand debate about the future of cinema.  The debate between film and digital. 

You would have trouble today explaining film as a physical medium to a millenial on the street, but even to those who can remember using film for family movies and photos the difference between film and digital can be difficult to parse.

Has this ever happened to you: you're watching a movie on TV and something seems off.  It just doesn't look like how it did in theaters, and you think to yourself, "I don’t know, it looks weird. It’s the picture on the TV; it just looks … too real."

My mentor in the television business was Fred Friendly. For those who never heard of him, he pretty much invented TV news. He was Edward R. Murrow’s producer for many years before he became President of CBS News.


In today’s digital era, platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram dominate our online lives with content created by influencers and creators making a lot of money with the videos they make. It’s easy to see why this is such an attractive career.


Local TV news is also in trouble. Viewership is down and the all-important younger demographic is not even interested in watching. How can we get them watching?
